Welcome to the tenth annual sports awards.

We want to give public recognition to the stars of the grassroots sporting scene in the Harborough and Lutterworth areas and acknowledge the people who deserve an accolade for the tremendous effort they put into their sport. It's not just the players we want to reward, it's also those behind the scenes such as the coaches, the groundsmen, the organisers and of course the mums and dads, who make it possible for others to enjoy their sport.

Only our readers' votes will count, except in the Sports Personality and Sports Alliance awards in which the winner will be chosen by our judges, taking into account the number of votes polled, as well as other criteria. The top three in each category will be invited to an evening presentation dinner at the Three Swans Hotel in Harborough on Thursday 24th November, when the winners will be announced. To put yourself forward for an award, or someone else, or a team (people can be entered for more than one category), complete the nomination form at the Categories/Entry section (see left) or in the Harborough Mail and Lutterworth Mail each week. You can nominate as many people as you want. You can only vote for someone who has been nominated first.

Each week, we will publish in the paper the list of people nominated. To vote for them, complete the voting form in the paper and post to Harborough Sports Awards, 9 Northampton Road, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 9HB.

What it's all about

THE Harborough Mail has launched the 2011 Sports Awards to give a public pat on the back to the stars of the grassroots sporting scene in the Harborough and Lutterworth area. We want you to nominate the winners and the top achievers at your club and in your sport or someone you know who lives in your street who deserves an accolade for the tremendous effort they put in.

We also want to hear about the people behind the scenes, the coaches, the groundsmen, and the mums and dads who make it possible for others to enjoy their chosen sports. As your nominations come in over the next few weeks, we will add the names of the people you nominate to the list of those who readers can vote for. For the next two months you can vote for any of the names on the list of people who have been nominated, using the voting coupon published every week in both the Harborough Mail and its sister paper the Lutterworth Mail.

To be eligible for the only Sports Awards event aimed exclusively at people in this area, they should live within the area of Leicestershire and Northants covered by the Harborough and Lutterworth Mail or compete for a club within the area. You can vote each week so the sooner you nominate someone, the longer readers will have to vote for them. It is then down to you, our readers. Your votes will determine the winners. Only our readers’ votes will count when it comes to picking the winner for each category. The exceptions are the blue riband award - Sports Personality of the Year - and the Sports Alliance Special Award, in which the winners will be chosen by our judges, taking into account the number of votes polled as well as other criteria. The votes will be counted up and a shortlist of the top three in each category will be announced. These people, together with their guests, will be invited to the gala awards presentation dinner, on Thursday, November 24, at the Three Swans Hotel in Harborough, where the winners will be announced and presented with their awards.

The Sports Awards event has proved such a tremendous success, it is now in its tenth year. Once again, the Harborough and Lutterworth Mail is organising the event. Each category is sponsored by a local business and a representative from each sponsor will invite the winner of each award onto the stage to receive their trophy.

If you would like to nominate an individual or team for an award, please fill in our online application form. The closing date for nominations is 5pm Monday 7th November. Click on the link below to open up the form. Give us contact details for yourself, as well as your nominee. Then select which category you wish to nominate them for, and the reasons why you think they should win. Please give us as much information as you can to assist the judges in the decision-making process.

Entry Guidelines

1. Please give as much information as possible telling us why you would like to nominate this person or team. If you would like to include pictures please send them to Harborough Mail Sports Awards, 9 Northampton Road, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 9HB or email them to brian.dodds@harboroughmail.co.uk.
2. The Harborough Mail Sports Awards welcomes nominations about individuals or teams who either live in the Harborough and Lutterworth Mail areas or who are competing in clubs in the area.
3. Applications and supporting information can be submitted by post or online. No responsibility can be taken by the organisers for any items lost, delayed or damaged in transit.
4. Only our readers' votes will count except in the Sports Personality and Sports Alliance awards in which the winners will be chosen by our judges, taking into account the number of votes polled as well as other criteria. The closing date for nominations is 5pm on Monday, November 7, and the closing date for voting is 5pm on Monday, November 14. Finalists will be invited to the awards presentation. This will be held at the Three Swans Hotel, Market Harborough, on Thursday, November 24.
5. Information contained in the award entries may be used as part of the promotional campaign for the awards. Details of the award winners will be published in print and online. Winners will be welcome to use the Harborough Mail Sports Awards logo and newspaper reports, by arrangement, in their own marketing and publicity operations.
