SHOE SOLES
The soles of shoes are worn out by the pressure of the feet on the ground. The harder the ground or the rougher the surface, the sooner the soles will wear through. Every time you walk, tiny particles are scraped off the soles by the ground. To obtain the maximum degree of durability the leather used for soles is compressed. Nowadays this firmness is achieved through the pressure of heavy rolling machines. Before mechanization cobblers hammered layers of leather together.
